GIABA TO HOLD 4TH ANNUAL PUBLIC LECTURE ON ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING REGIMES IN NILE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, FCT-ABUJA
The Inter-Governmental Group of Action against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) will hold a one-day Public Lecture on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) at the Nile University of Nigeria, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. The Public Lecture on AML/CFT, which will hold at 10am in the Nile University Main Auditorium, is the fourth in the series, following previous editions held at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Nigeria (2011), Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (2014) and University of Benin, Benin, Nigeria (2017).
The event seeks to sensitize members of the academic community at the Nile University on the phenomena of money laundering and terrorist financing in the West African sub-region and will feature paper presentations entitled ‘The Impact of Corruption and Financial Crimes on Regional Development in West Africa and the Way Forward’ and ‘Milestones in the Fight against Corruption and Money Laundering in Nigeria.’ The papers will be delivered by renowned anti-corruption czars, including Professor Bolaji Owasanoye (SAN), Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), respectively.
As part of sustained efforts to raise awareness against the scourges of economic and financial crimes, particularly money laundering and terrorist financing, GIABA has identified the ivory towers as a veritable platform to reach a large community of well-informed people towards achieving a crime-free society.
About 300 participants consisting of the academic community of Nile University of Nigeria are expected to take part in the event while other tertiary institutions across Nigeria will join the event virtually.
Dignitaries expected at the event include the Honourable Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, who will deliver a Goodwill Message. The chief host of the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University of Nigeria, Professor Osman Nuri Aras and the Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, Mr. Hamman Tukur Moddibbo, will also deliver remarks at the occasion.
Also at the event, GIABA’s Director of Policy and Research, Mr. Muazu Umaru, will deliver a presentation titled ‘An Overview of AML/CFT Framework in West Africa: The Role of GIABA as a Regional Initiative.’ The presentation will be aimed at showcasing the mandate, operations and achievements of GIABA in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing in the region.
